TRIBUTE TO ELDER STEVE KACHIKWU (MY “GM”)

The news of your passing came as a heavy blow — one that is still difficult to fully process. Elder Steve Kachikwu… my “GM”… it feels strange and painful to speak of you in the past.

Back in our days at HINTS MAGAZINE, life was a blend of intense work and unforgettable moments. I served as Production Manager, and you were our General Manager — but beyond titles, you were a steady hand, a guiding force, and a man who understood people.

I still hear your voice clearly. You would call me “My PM,” and in that simple phrase was trust, respect, and a bond that made the work meaningful. Those were not just working days; they were defining moments of growth, discipline, and shared purpose.

Working with you came with its own pressure — the kind that shaped excellence. As GM, you also doubled as the man driving circulation and distribution, so there was never room for delay. I was constantly on my toes to ensure the magazines were ready on time. We worked long, demanding hours — from the office to the printing press — doing everything necessary to meet deadlines and get copies out across the length and breadth of the country.

Yet, even in the midst of that pressure, those moments carried a unique rhythm. It was steady, purposeful hard work, but it was also filled with camaraderie, learning, and even laughter. You had a way of making the burden lighter without lowering the standard.

You had a rare leadership style — calm, thoughtful, and firm without being harsh. Deadlines were tight, expectations were high, but you never created fear. Instead, you created responsibility. You made us want to do better, not because we were forced to, but because we respected you.

Beyond the office, you were a good man — kind, approachable, and sincere. You carried yourself with quiet dignity, and you treated people with fairness, regardless of background or status. That alone speaks volumes about who you were.

Looking back now, I realize how much of what I know about structure, responsibility, and professionalism was shaped during those years under your leadership.

Your passing leaves a space that cannot easily be filled. But I am grateful — grateful for the opportunity to have worked with you, learned from you, and shared those meaningful years.

Rest on, GM.
Your “PM” will always remember you.
